ASUP to Sustain Pressure on Poly Management

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in the South West Zone at the weekend enjoyed their colleague at the Kwara State Polytechnic who had been in a protracted labour dispute with its management to sustain the struggle.

The zonal ASUP who met at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa directed the Kwara Poly Teachers to sign the attendance register opened by the management but still shun lectures.

Spokesman of the zonal meeting Kayode Oguntuase who briefed newsmen stated that the meeting was convened at an emergency level on the crisis at the Kwara Poly especially the suspension of the local ASUP chairman Comrade Ola Adefila.

The zonal ASUP pleaded with the visitor to the polytechnic, Governor Bukola Saraki to prevail on the management of the polytechnic to beat a retreat from its confrontational stand in order to avert imminent showdown.

In order to stave off any possible shutdown of polytechnics which may be the consequence of a hard-line posture of the polytechnic administration, the zonal ASUP appointment a negotiator-in-chief to lead further talks between the union and the government?

The union commended the state government for its peace move and promised to reciprocate by opening all doors for dialogue and discussion in a mutually acceptable manner.

Oguntuase however, boasted of a monolithic congress that can withstand the antics of an administrator with a reputation to creating and festering crisis for crude ego trip".

 
 
 

Lecturers Threaten Strike over Poly Crisis

Tertiary institutions in Kwara State rose from an emergency meeting held at the College of Education, Oro, with a plea to State Governor, Bukola Saraki, to intervene in the rift at the state polytechnic to avert an imminent labour crisis.

In a communique at the end of the meeting signed by Comrades Bayo Aina and Ahmed Ambali, acting chairman and secretary, the institutions under the umbrella of Committees of Union of Teaching Institutions (CUTI) expressed misgivings at the on-going crisis at the polytechnic and wanted an end in favour of ASUP.

It expressed disappointment at the suspension of the ASUP local chairman, Comrade Ola Adefila and described his plight as unfortunate and a clear case of witch hunting.

The union gave a two weeks ultimatum to the polytechnic authorities to reinstate Adefila and other unjustly dismissed/suspended staff.

"Failure to meet this ultimatum may lead to a situation where staff members of the five tertiary institutions in the state would embark on industrial action by July16," the Union threatened.

In an earlier meeting, CUTI said it felt uncomfortable "that lies are being peddled and unfounded rumours circulated which may not augur well for industrial harmony".
