Court to decide ASUP’s suit September 30
The Punch, Friday July 23, 2004
Doyin Adebusuyi, Ilorin

Justice Joseph Gbadeyan of Ilorin High Court has reserved ruling in the suit between the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin and the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics till September 30.

The Chairman of ASUP, Mr. Ola Adefila, and two others had dragged the rector of the school and three others to court in April, this year to challenge the institution’s decision to reduce the retirement age of academic staff of the polytechnic from 65 years to 60 and stopping the collection of the approved scale of salaries of HATISS 12-15 which they have allegedly been enjoying since September 2002.

At the last sitting of the court on July 15, Gbadeyan had directed counsel to all parties in the suit to submit their written submissions and legal authorities to the court by Wednesday.

He then fixed Thursday for adoption of their submissions.

Kwara Poly given ultimatum over sacked lecturers
The Punch, Monday July 26, 2004

Security has been beefed up at the Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin following a 14-day ultimatum given to the school by students to recall their sacked and suspended lecturers including the Chairman of the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr. Ola Adefila, or be prepared for a showdown.

In a letter to the Acting Rector and the Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, the students, under the aegis of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, asked the polytechnic to appoint a substantive rector and a bursar for the school without further delay.

It also demanded that the school should tender an apology to both students and staff of the school for “illegal sack and suspension of staff.”

The letter which was made available to our correspondent on Sunday, was signed by the Senate President, NAPS, Mr. Agboola Rahmon, and copies were sent to the Kwara State Director of the State Security Service; Commissioner of Police, Kwara Command; Commissioner for Education; and Registrar, Kwara Poly.
