Ex-poly rector faults panel’s report
Doyin Adebusuyi, Ilorin

The Punch, Thursday August 05, 2004

The immediate past Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Prof. Mobolade Olatunji, has said the former Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Alhaji Ade Yusuf, and himself were never asked to refund N52 million to the polytechnic.

Olatunji, who was reacting to “The Punch” story of July 21, 2004 however, confirmed that “based on the information gathered from other sources, it appears the committee recommended that the former Chairman of the council, Alhaji Ade Yusuf, and I should account for about N52 million.”

The state government had on June 9, 2003 inaugurated a panel headed by Prof. Hussein Oloyede to probe alleged financial and contract scandals in the polytechnic.

At the end of the committee’s assignment, some key officials of the institution including Olatunji were indicted.

Apart from recommending that Olatunji and Yusuf should account for N52 million, the committee also recommended that Olatunji should be barred from holding public office at the state level for the next 10 years.

The committee directed that Olatunji should be paid his sabbatical leave entitlement, while the N250,000 loan obtained by him should be deducted from his final entitlement.

But government in a White Paper accepted other recommendations but was silent on the controversial N52 million.

Olatunji said there was no money to either be refunded or accounted for as recommended by the committee, since the money had been expended on the three accreditation exercises embarked upon by the school in October 2002, March 2001 and July 2001.
