KWARAPOLY PLC…SARAKI’S HAVEN. Series 2
(
Released:11th June 2004)

About 323 members of staff of Kwara State Polytechnic were to be disengaged from service in the on-going staff reduction exercise by the State Government over their alleged involvement in irregularities against the rules and regulations of the institution. According to news report only 27 out of this figure would be retired. The remaining number will be summarily sacked. These disclosures were contained in a letter written and signed by the state's education commissioner, Dr. Femi Ogunsola, dated March 30, 2004 addressed to Governor Bukola Saraki.

At the inception of his administration, Dr. Bukola set up a probe panel to investigate the activities of the state polytechnic. In a press statement, Dr. Ogunsola said “At the end of the investigation, the panel came up with white paper report, which was fully deliberated upon by the Kwara State Executive Council”. Expectedly, the exercise would bring the salary and wage burden relief of about =N=12.3 million on (the State Government or) the institution.

Kwara Polytechnics' total staff strength is 862 about 435 are senior career officers, and record shows that overwhelming majority of those that have received their dismissal letters so far were senior staff.

About three months before this exercise, 22% salary increase approved by the administration of Muhammad Lawal for the staff of the institution and on which they were been paid for 18 months was on the directive of the state government reversed to the status quo and to add salt to injury ordered the deduction of the sum (the increment) for the next 18 consecutive months.

With the deduction many were left with a take-home of =N=2000 monthly while some will be left with nothing but debt for the next 18 months. The case against this strangulating decision filled by the staff union is still in court.

REFLECTIONS

  • Monthly subvention to the polytechnic is said to be =N=30 million and monthly staff salary is =N=36 million. The excess is taken care of by the institution's internally generated revenue.

  • Student school fees have been reviewed upward by about 45% and the student population is said to be over 30,000.

  • 323 job cut (37.5% of the staff strength) translate into N12.3 million for Dr. Bukola Saraki; the sum if deducted from =N=30 million remains =N=17.7 which is already taken care of by the increment in school fees.

Salary reverted to status quo-ante and additional sum already collected for 18 months is to be deducted for the next 18 months.

Therefore, with this, Kwara State Polytechnic has become a veritable ground for Dr. Bukola Saraki to satiate his appetite for quick money.

Kwara Polytechnic is the largest singular employer of labour in the state and host to the best paid state workers. Been the state's highest educational institution, a great number of experienced and seasoned academicians and administrators will be lost to this purge driven by greed and huge to revive the ailing debt ridden ruling family.

Punishment should corroborate with offence, what warrant dismissal of 296 worker (only 27 is to be retired)?

The implications are that they will not be entitled to any benefit (pension or gratuity or both) and it will be difficult to secure another job. These brought an abrupt end to their career and destroy their integrity. What ungratefulness to their decades of service to the state! Most of these unfortunate ones know no other art or trade to make ends meet, and no doubt most of them are the higher income earners in their communities, bread winners and pride to their respective families. These will further entrench poverty, a programme vigorously pursued by Bukola administration through various shades. The choice of dismissal was adopted to save Saraki family millions of naira to settle entitlements of retired workers.

Misfortune that befell Kwara State Polytechnic at Saraki's hand are too many, narration of tales of woes from other state establishment keep on increasing daily. More and worst of these should be expected, because anything that could translate into money would be sought out and implemented as policy by Governor Bukola Saraki. Kwarans should tighten their belt, to re-fill already emptied seven (7) wells of money.
